Isotopic Ratios of Carbon and Oxygen in some Limestons in South Korea

Abstract
Isotope compositions of a total of 51 limestone sample from different geologic ages and provinces in Korea range from -6.4 to +6.0?? in ¥ä^13C and +8.1 to +24.9?? in ¥ä^18O, implying only marine deposition except a carbonate nodule of Jinju formation in Kyongsang basin. Hongjom limestone was deposited in shallow marine sedimentary basin with an inflow of freshwater from land.
All carbonate rocks do now show any definite secular trend with their increasing geologic age.
The variable ¥ä^18O values of the limestones in Korea was interpreted as a result of post-depositional equilibration with isotopically light meteoric water and/or decarbonation during regional metamorphism.
The difference of isotopic composition between weakly or non-metamorphosed Samtaesan limestone and Majonri limestone metamorphosed highly in Ogcheon geosyncline is consistent with the petrological data in terms of grade of metamorphism.
According to the isotopic data, limestone pebbles of Hwanggangri formation in Hwanggangri area might have been derived from near Ogcheon geosynclinal basin, probably, Samtaesan linestone.
